Embedding Social and Emotional Learning in Pre-K Classrooms
Felicia Sprayberry
Dimensions of Early Childhood, v52 n2 p8-15 2024
The development of social and emotional learning in children can directly impact overall learning, emotional skills, and socialization of young children (The Urban Child Institute, 2024). Equal emphasis on social and emotional learning should mirror the importance and impact of academic learning. A philosophy of integrated social and emotional teaching can help children to better develop and generalize social and emotional skills in classroom environments. Common strategies used when addressing academic skills may be implemented to embed social and emotional learning throughout the instructional day. The acquisition and understanding of social and emotional development can serve as a coping mechanism for children during times of stress or anxiety (Children's Hospital-Colorado, n.d.). When children exhibit appropriate social skills, their ability to develop strong, meaningful relationships with others may increase, which can have a lasting positive effect throughout their lifespan.
