Educating Future-Ready Students: Policy Roadmap to Bridge Social and Emotional Learning and Career and Workforce Development
Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning
A key goal of preschool to high school education is to ensure that students are "future-ready"--with the knowledge, skills, and drive to navigate their careers and lives. But the future is rapidly shifting. This report reframes what it means for students to be future-ready. To be future-ready, students need academic knowledge, training, and credentials that have traditionally been viewed as central for success in a particular pathway. But equally important are the social and emotional skills necessary for success in work and life. There is no one path to reach this goal. Students need an education that allows them to set and follow their own unique paths without limiting their options. They need opportunities that foster lifelong learning to meet the shifting challenges of the future of work. The aim of this report is to provide a state policy roadmap for a PreK-12 education that prepares students to succeed in a rapidly changing world. Key to this effort is the integration of social and emotional learning (SEL) with career and workforce development (CWD). This roadmap builds on prior efforts by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), Civic, and the Coalition for Career Development Center to advance a state-level developmental framework (see ED622311) for systematically integrating SEL and CWD.
