Employment in the Time of Crisis: International Faculty and Recessionary Events in American Higher Education
Noelle A. Mecoli
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Florida
International faculty contribute to the global knowledge exchange between countries and are increasingly important to colleges and universities as a mechanism for internationalization. This study, guided by resource dependence theory, examined international faculty employment during and after two recessions -- the 2001 Recession and the Great Recession of 2008-09 by public and private sector. Domestic faculty were also examined as a comparison group. Using a fixed effects econometric approach to model changes to international faculty employment when financial resources can be stressed in recessionary events, I find that private institutions were more likely than public institutions to increase their international faculty during and after the 2001 Recession. During the Great Recession, there was no significant growth for either public or private institution except private institutions that ranked in a global ranking increased international faculty after the recession. Despite the financial hardships of the Great Recession, I find there were also no significant decreases to international faculty suggesting that international faculty were a resource for colleges and universities across the U.S. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
