Range Is Everything! Success with the Adolescent Male Voice
Killian, Janice N.; Wayman, John B.
Teaching Music, v17 n5 p26-29 Feb 2010
The changing male voice has long been a challenge, not only for students but also for directors who need to find just the right music to help students feel most successful. This article presents the key elements for success in selecting boys' literature: (1) Know the students' voices; (2) Range is everything; (3) Avoid pitches below A for tenors; (4) Avoid pitches above B for basses; (5) Three-part music (TTB) can often be more attainable than two-part music (TB); (6) Unison is almost always impossible; (7) Text really counts for guys (they are romantics at heart); (8) Avoid parallel harmonies (especially parallel thirds); (9) Keeping lines short and repetitive helps--just manipulating pitches is challenging; (10) Do not be afraid to rearrange, change keys, or omit certain notes for certain boys; and (11) Musical alterations are okay if the integrity of the music is maintained. The changing male voice is a creature all its own; in fact, middle school boys' choir is a creature all its own. Directing it takes a careful hand, an open heart, and a keen ear. Directors must listen to boys' voices, empower them with the knowledge of musical and physical maturation, and provide them with the opportunity to succeed through appropriate literature.
