The U.S. Supreme Court issued three rulings in special education cases during the past 2 years. Considering that in the previous 25 years, the high court had issued only 14 rulings, these three decisions represent a significant increase in the special education cases heard by the Court. These important rulings all addressed parental rights in due process hearings. The cases were as follows: (1) "Schaffer v. Weast" (2005); (2) "Winkelman v. Parma City Schools" (2007); and (3) "Arlington Central School District Board of Education v. Murphy" (2006). The first two cases, "Schaffer v. Weast" and "Winkelman v. Parma City Schools," provide a context for understanding the third case, "Arlington Central School District Board of Education v. Murphy," which is the focus of this article.
