With a culturally diverse student population of nearly 500 students in grades 6, 7, and 8, Black River Falls (Wisconsin) Middle School is no stranger to the effects and influences of bullying. This year, however, a group of dedicated staff members, along with an unusually mature group of eighth-grade students, took great strides toward minimizing its effects. The layout of the school's lunchroom is somewhat unique in that it has 25 eight-person tables, as opposed to the standard 15- to 20-person bench-seating tables. For the past several years, it had been its practice to allow students to select their lunch partners at the change of every quarter. Each grade level sent its students to the lunchroom and anywhere from 150 to 180 students scrambled about--with minimal teacher influence or guidance--and chose a table by signing their name on a sheet of paper taped to the center of each table. The lunchroom seating policy inevitably left one or more kids feeling left out--causing no small amount of tension, hurt feelings, and hostility. To remedy the lunchroom situation, student council members suggest random seating assignments in the lunchroom. Students promote the change. The result is less bullying.
