Implementing a Library Helper Program Is Easy, Economical, and Energizing
Sproul, Betty
Library Media Connection, v24 n7 p44, 46 Apr-May 2006
Today's schools place a great emphasis on encouraging community service. At Raytown South Middle School, Library Helpers and community service go hand in hand. As of the beginning of April, 34 sixth, seventh, and eighth grade Library Helpers have come to the library media center 427 times and given 185 hours of community service. They have shelved 21,000 books and helped with other clerical jobs in the library media center. And, they make locating a book easy for everyone in the school community of 1,200 students and staff members! In this article, the author describes the Library Helper Program. The program is easy and inexpensive to implement, and it benefits all the students, teachers, and staff at the school. To implement the program, the following are needed: (1) an application/contract form; (2) a sign-in sheet; (3) a few eager students who love and appreciate books; (4) paint stirrer sticks from the local paint store; (5) a few hours of intensive training each fall; (6) a time period during the school day or after school when the students are available; and (7) a desire to see students beam with pride at their newly acquired skills. Intrinsically, the program gives students a feeling of ownership in their library media center. Students who come to shelve books have the ability to locate their own books and have a marketable skill for future jobs in other libraries.
