Picture This: Your Students Can't Wait to Review for a Test!
Dray, Lynn
Science Scope, v27 n8 p39-40 May 2004
In this article, the author describes a Picture Review Page. A Picture Review Page is a paper with illustrations representing each of the main concepts in a unit. There are also lines for students to write information on each topic. It is a particularly effective review method for three reasons: (1) Students remember better if they have a mental picture rather than just trying to remember words; (2) Students remember things better if they are in color; and (3) Students remember things more easily if they are just a little bit weird or unusual. Most importantly, it is productive fun. Students look forward to this regular review routine, enjoy it immensely, and therefore, are thoroughly engaged during the activity. It is the active participation of the students--mental and physical--that makes this a very powerful teaching tool.
