Reading, Writing, and Conducting Inquiry about Science in Kindergarten
Patrick, Helen; Mantzicopoulos, Panayota; Samarapungavan, Ala
Young Children, v64 n6 p32-38 Nov 2009
Over the past three years, the authors have worked with kindergarten teachers to develop study units with sequences of integrated science inquiry and literacy activities appropriate for kindergartners. Their work, which is part of the Scientific Literacy Project, has been very successful. The success of the Scientific Literacy Project (SLP) is in the "approach" to science instruction, literacy instruction, and their integration, rather than the use of any particular book or activity. Teachers can apply this approach to any science topic, taking into account children's interests and the resources available. In this article, the authors outline the central ideas of the SLP, focusing on literacy-related activities. They present examples from many classes to illustrate how a range of integrated activities can flexibly support the learning of reading and writing while promoting scientific literacy.
