Child Care Costs
Lewis, Anne C.
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v70 n2 p69-70 Oct 2004
In this article, the author discusses how kindergarten is close to being universal across the United States. More than half (56%) of the children who are attending kindergarten are in full-day programs. Whether they are in full-day programs or half-day programs, the kindergartners certainly do daily work in the areas of reading and language arts. Those attending for the full day make greater gains in these subjects than half-day students manage to achieve. The American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) called for preschool teachers to have baccalaureate degrees and higher salaries provided by public and private sources. Here, the author discusses the low wages that child-care workers receive and how such low wages contribute to the annual job-turnover rates among early-care workers.
