Reporting Pupil Progress: Policies, Procedures, and Systems. ERS Report
Linda H. Kunder; Paul J. Porwoll
Online Submission
After reviewing the controversy over traditional grading systems, the pros and cons of various grading systems, and recent practices in reporting and marking pupil progress, this report presents the results of a survey in which 341 districts responded about their reporting and marking practices. The results are broken down by the size of the district, educational level, the standards used in measuring achievement, school board policy statements, methods of recording grades on permanent records, proportion of districts making changes in their practices in the past five years, the frequency of reporting, and the percentage of districts currently considering changing their grading and reporting practices. Kindergarten, where checklist grading is predominant, is the only level at which letter grading is not the most common method of reporting student progress. Current practices of 23 school systems in 14 states are presented. These examples cover three areas: school board policy statements on reporting pupil progress, guidelines and procedures for reporting pupil progress, and sample report cards and pupil evaluation forms, from kindergarten through senior high school.
