A Corpus Linguistic Analysis of the Aboutness of EdD Dissertations in Educational Leadership
Lana D. Womack
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Holy Family University
The confusion between an EdD or PhD, the two terminal degrees in education, remains as current as it was at the beginning of the degrees' existence. The common belief is that the EdD is practitioner-oriented and the PhD research-oriented. The aim of present research is to clarify the confusion by conducting a corpus analysis of the aboutness of EdD dissertations in educational leadership. A study corpus was created using 100 randomly chosen EdD dissertations completed between the years 2017 and 2019. This corpus was analyzed using a keyword analysis, collocate analysis, and qualitative coding of concordance lines to uncover what these EdD dissertations were about. Both the quantitative and qualitative analyses suggest that the EdD dissertations are about practical concerns in K-12 education. After the examination of the content concordance lines, two themes were established: "Valuing Education as a Profession and Providing Opportunities for All". These themes do reflect practical concerns in K-12 education. However, a comparison made with a concurrent study of PhD dissertations found few distinctions between the two. This research study did not find any solid evidence to support the researcher versus practitioner distinction that is currently often accepted to be true.
