Special Milk Program
US Department of Agriculture
The Special Milk Program provides milk to children in schools, child care institutions and eligible camps that do not participate in other Federal child nutrition meal service programs. The program reimburses schools and institutions for the milk they serve. In 2008, 4,676 schools and residential child care institutions participated, along with 743 summer camps and 522 non-residential child care institutions. Schools in the National School Lunch or School Breakfast Programs may also participate in the Special Milk Program to provide milk to children in half-day pre-kindergarten and kindergarten programs where children do not have access to the school meal programs. This article discusses the following: (1) how the program works; (2) the types of milk that can be offered and the nutritional requirements for the milk program; (3) how children may qualify for free milk; (4) the reimbursement schools get; (5) the quantity of milk served annually in the Special Milk Program; and (6) the cost of the program.
