Many contemporary superintendents face a new challenge, one of ensuring that the school buildings in their school districts are safe, sound, and conducive to offering the educational programs found in twenty-first century classrooms. Despite the growing need to upgrade the physical plants in many school districts, few superintendents have the background necessary to manage a major building project. This article notes that the traditional education most school superintendents complete is not adequate in providing details in the area of school construction. This article describes the basic steps necessary to complete a successful building or renovation project. The construction-related aspects of this article review numerous management strategies in a step-by-step format necessary to help ensure a successful renovation or building project. By following the ideas presented here, a practicing school superintendent will have the opportunity to enter into a building project with the basic knowledge necessary to succeed, both as the ongoing educational leader of a school district, and in the new role as the leader and the driving force behind a renovation or construction project. Any superintendent can be successful in completing a construction project by gaining a real understanding of the entire process and then coupling that working knowledge with a common sense approach to the task.
