ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, National University
This qualitative descriptive case study, set in an urban middle school environment, utilized Epstein's Six Types of Involvement as its theoretical framework to explore the complex issue of chronic absenteeism among middle school students. The primary focus of the study was the exploration of parents' perspectives on this issue, particularly in understanding their roles in their children's attendance and academic achievement, and the necessary interventions to mitigate chronic absenteeism. The research explored three key questions: (1) parents' views on chronic absenteeism, (2) their perceived roles in influencing their child's attendance and achievement, and (3) the support or interventions needed to address this issue. Participants included parents of chronically absent middle school students, whose insights were gathered through individual and focus group interviews. This approach provided a comprehensive understanding of parents' perceptions and behaviors related to student attendance and truancy. The findings of this study revealed the critical need for a collaborative approach involving schools, parents, and transportation authorities, emphasizing the importance of support for parent-student relationships. The study identified several themes, including the impact of parental involvement on student attendance, the role of external factors in absenteeism, and the effectiveness of existing interventions. These findings paved the way for future research, suggesting the need to further investigate the dynamics of parental engagement and its influence on reducing chronic absenteeism in urban middle school settings.
