Exploring the Perceptions of PK-8 Classroom Teachers Regarding Teacher Leadership and Their Influence on School Culture

ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
This study explores teacher perception of teacher leadership and the influence of teachers on school culture. The study addresses a gap in scholarship regarding the perception of teachers (not administrators) on these issues. The research questions that guided this dissertation structured its analysis by limiting the data to information that specifically related to two critical issues. The research questions can be summarized accordingly: How do teachers perceive their role as teacher leaders within the school? How do teachers perceive their influence on school culture? This study utilized a semi-structured interview format to ask professional teachers about their individual perceptions of teacher leadership. The population for the study is PK-8 teachers represented as a sample of 10 from different school districts and responsible for different grade levels. The participants had their responses examined for common themes and ideas expressed to identify shared perceptions of the teacher's roles as leaders in school culture. Through analysis of responses, several themes emerged regarding the role of teacher leaders including autonomy, teamwork and collaboration, administration, communication, parental engagement, building positive relationships, doing what is best for the students, and teachers' voices. Regarding school culture, participants believed teachers had an important role in the development and maintenance of school culture if provided the autonomy and freedom to do so by the administration or other authorities.
