A Survey of Dual-Certified Educational Vision Professionals in Texas
Smith, Derrick W.; Griffin-Shirley, Nora; Pogrund, Rona L.; Lan, William Y.; Dignan, K. C.; Marsh, Ruth Ann
RE:view: Rehabilitation Education for Blindness and Visual Impairment, v39 n1 p15-24 Spr 2007
The authors conducted a study to determine (a) the incidence of dual-certified vision professionals (professionals certified as both teachers of the visually impaired and orientation and mobility specialists) in Texas, (b) the degree to which these professionals worked in both roles between 2003 and 2006, (c) the reasons vision professionals obtained the second vision-specific certification, and (d) if applicable, the reasons these professionals were not functioning in both capacities. The authors surveyed 72 dual-certified vision professionals and found that most functioned in only one capacity, mainly as teachers of the visually impaired. The results of the study indicate that a high percentage of the participants acquired the second certification because of personal interest in the other profession. (Contains 2 tables.)
