Assessing Pre-Service Teachers' Attitudes and Self-Efficacy in Collaborating with Families about ASD
Nicole Rodriguez
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Indiana University
Communication is one of the key components of family-school collaboration. In addition to the common benefits seen with family-school collaboration (increased attendance, increased academic performance, decrease of problem behaviors), communication allows for information about a student's growth and development to be shared between the home and school environments (Cook, Dearing, & Zachrisson, 2018). A professional development workshop for pre-service teachers was created to help pre-service teachers understand the social, emotional, and academic benefits to family-school collaboration and how to implement skills to increase positive communication between home and school for students with autism. The current study utilized a mixed methods research design to determine whether the professional development workshop was effective for pre-service teachers. The participants completed a self-efficacy survey before and after the workshop. The workshop was conducted through an online platform (i.e. Zoom) and available for pre-service teachers enrolled in G203- Communication for Youth Serving Professionals at Indiana University Bloomington. The previous literature has reinforced the need for further research and training for pre-service teachers in the area of family-school collaboration and communication regarding children with autism.
