Case Study: Design and Delivery of a New University Course in a Holistic Palliative and End of Life Care Certificate Program
Drews, Lisa M.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
The purpose of this dissertation was to assess an undergraduate, online course, "The Process of Dying" offered in fall 2016 at Wilmington University. End of Life education has been limited to date and most individuals wait until there is a pressing need to consider actively planning for their death. "The Process of Dying" is the second course developed within a new online certificate program in Palliative and End of Life care and this course was assessed by this case study research. The course was developed for the online format using the Backward Design Model (Wiggins & McTighe, 2005). This case study used Parker's (2013) Design Interactions Media Evaluation (DIME) model to determine the strengths and weakness of "The Process of Dying" course. Learning objectives and outcomes of the course were identified with readings, resources and assignments designed to enable students to meet the course objectives. This qualitative case study examined the strengths and weaknesses of the newly developed course and identified ways in which the course can be improved for future offerings. The case study conducted for this dissertation assessed all content areas of the course. The course assessment will provide recommendations to improve the achievement of course objectives for future offerings as well as recommendations to extend the reach of this information to disciplines outside of the health professions.
