I Guess the Joke Was on Me: A Reality Rub Reclaiming Intervention
Hoyt, Lisa; Fecser, Frank A.
Reclaiming Children and Youth, v19 n4 p55-60 2011
Ian is a 17-year-old student attending a therapeutic school in an urban district. He was referred less than a year ago due to behavioral and academic issues at the comprehensive high school. One instance in his art class, Ian overreacted when his teacher misinterpreted his humor, leading to a major school crisis. Learning to recognize the early physiological signs of anger would allow a cognitive intervention quickly in the chain of events. Understanding his negative self-talk and substituting more positive statements might also be a useful tool in interrupting the anger sequence. Because an adult took the time to engage Ian in a Reality Rub Reclaiming Intervention, he better understands his thinking errors and can begin to change a long-standing pattern of self-defeating behavior.
