Building a Comprehensive High School Reading Program that Works
Spaniak, Nancy
ERS Spectrum, v25 n3 p37-42 Sum 2007
Following a nationwide trend, reading scores at Homewood-Flossmoor Community High School in suburban Chicago began dropping with the entrance of the new millennium. However, through its newly created Reading Department, Homewood-Flossmoor Community High School is providing comprehensive, direct reading instruction throughout grade and skill levels; supporting the needs of transfer and at-risk students; and leading a cross-curricular reading initiative that has reading scores shooting upward at an astounding rate. In this case study, the author outlines how Homewood-Flossmoor Community High School successfully implemented a reading program based, in part, on research by Robert Marzano and Silver, Strong & Associates. Through the creation of seven new reading courses, small group learning, peer leaders, academic support across content areas, and a collaboration between reading specialists and other school professionals, this school is raising the standard for reading programs and creating lifelong readers.
