Unearthing the Problem: Social Emotional Learning in the High School English Classroom
Julie Harding
English Journal, v109 n5 p73-80 2020
The author began a project - the Technology Reflection Project - in May of 2019. As the last few weeks of tests and projects approached, her students needed to focus on academics and finish strong. As summer approached, she wanted to reduce her screen time, get outside, connect with her family, and form good habits. The author though, "Why not make it our class mission to accomplish these objectives over the last few weeks of school?" And so, she did, and she quickly realized that the project had positive implications not only for students' grades but also for their overall well- being. In short, without meaning to, the author had infused social emotional learning (SEL) into her classroom. This article outlines how conducting an inventory of tech usage encouraged a class of high school sophomores to self-regulate their online screen time.
