Participation in Athletics and Academic Performance: Analyzing Coaches' Perceptions of Athlete's Performance In-Season in Contrast to Off-Season
Marcellino Marra
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Centenary University
The purpose of this study was to investigate what are coaches' perceptions of their student-athletes' academic performance in-season in contrast to off-season. Academic performance was defined as the student-athlete's grade point average, attendance, and behavior referrals. The subjects in the study were coaches from a typical New Jersey High School Athletic Conference, consisting of 44 schools. The survey investigated the coaches' perceptions on whether student athletes have a better grade point average, fewer behavior referrals, and better attendance in-season or in the off-season. The survey instrument was adapted with permission from the original survey based on Foye's 2018 study. One hundred and eleven coaches volunteered to complete the survey. Research data revealed that coaches' perceptions of student-athletes' academic performance in-season in contrast to their academic performance in the off-season yielded one significant difference in the area of attendance. The research data revealed several approaching significant differences in the area of grade-point average, behavior, and attendance. Based on the findings, coaches tend to have similar perceptions on student-athletes' academic performance in-season and out-of-season.
