Improving Safety in Middle and High Schools: Best Practices of Title IX Coordinators for Preventing and Responding to Sexual Assault and Harassment
Philip Edward Bundy
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, University of Arizona Global Campus
All kindergarten through 12th -grade public schools or school districts are required by law to appoint a Title IX coordinator. The problem was that there was a shortage of Title IX coordinator peer resources on best practices in existing literature. The purpose of this e-Delphi study was to develop a consensus of Title IX coordinators to resolve the deficiency of peer resources regarding their best practices for preventing and addressing the aftermath of sexual harassment and sexual assault in middle and high schools within New Mexico. Fifty-seven Title IX coordinators were invited; 10 participated in three rounds of surveys administered via SurveyMonkey, reaching a consensus on their best practices after two rounds. Participants in this study emphasized the need for training, nondiscrimination policies, and involvement of Title IX coordinators. The practical implications of the findings are that implementation of preventive measures, comprehensive training programs, and effective Title IX policies can create safer school environments. Participants emphasized the importance of proactive strategies, including staff and student training programs and the use of at-risk surveys. The study's findings and limitations lead to a recommendation for further research to expand on the topic of preventing and addressing the aftermath of sexual harassment and assault in middle and high schools.
