Students with Autism Spectrum Stories of Transitioning into the Collegiate Environment
Dean Wood
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northcentral University
The purpose of this qualitative narrative inquiry was to explore how students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) tell stories about experiences transitioning into the collegiate environment in Nebraska. The problem addressed in this study was that students with ASD often do not have the available needed resources needed to successfully transition from high school into the collegiate environment. The purpose of this qualitative narrative inquiry was to explore how students with ASD tell stories about experiences in the collegiate environment in Nebraska. The sample was eight college students in Nebraska who identified as having ASD. Narrative interviews were used to collect the stories of college students with ASD. Narrative analysis was used to analyze the data using Schlossberg's theory of transition as theoretical framework. Three themes that emerged from the data (contact with support services staff resulted in smooth post-secondary transition, individualized accommodations facilitated classroom success, and self-reliance fostered through transitional challenges) were explained using direct quotes from the data as well as through a composite narrative as told through a composite character, "Transition Firsts: Experiences of a College Student with Autism Spectrum Disorder." There are two recommendations for practice: fostering the social development of students with ASD in the college setting, and professors should be trained to better serve students with ASD. Recommendations for future research include a need to understand how students with ASD understand relationships in the dating world, collegiate experiences of students who do not self-identify and why these students do not self-identify, and the need to complete research on professors' experiences with students with ASD.
