Cultivating the College Recruitment Domain through a Community of Practice
Thompson, Jacquelyn
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northeastern University
College staff performing recruiting tasks without collaboration or shared knowledge formation creates redundancies and knowledge gaps. This study sought to investigate causes and find solutions to recruitment gaps and redundancies. Participants and data collected in Cycle 1 consisted of interviews with college staff and recent high school graduates to understand influencing factors in deciding to transition to college and what participants identified as ways to facilitate a successful recruiting experience. Action steps were designed, implemented, and evaluated in Cycle 2 to support staff members responsible for student recruitment through a Virtual Community of Practice (VCoP). Volunteer leaders collaborated to design and establish a VCoP to identify gaps in knowledge and practice. A staff leader facilitated four sessions at the host institution. The assessment and evaluation of the VCoP included session observation, field notes, member checking, analytic memos, a post-intervention survey, transcription, coding, and analysis. The session facilitator and participants provided critical feedback that assisted the evaluation process. The study concluded that attendance at the VCoP sessions benefited participants. In addition, the group successfully identified crucial next steps to improve recruitment at the institution. Implications for the organization include sustained use of a VCoP to benefit the individual professional staff members, students, and institutional recruitment practices.
