ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Mississippi College
Throughout history, women have played an important role in the field of education. Women have served mostly in the realm of teaching but have steadily fought to become school leaders. The number of women principals has increased over time; however, the number of women who serve has high school principals has only grown marginally. This quantitative study was designed to determine the perceptions of superintendents and principals of women as high school principals. Data was collected using a survey to determine the barriers and facilitators for women who seek the role as a high school principal. The survey was sent via email to district superintendents and high school principals. The results of the survey showed that principals and superintendents have the same perceptions of what barriers women face when seeking the high school principalship and the facilitators that will increase their chances of obtaining a position as a high school principal. The findings also showed the specific barriers and facilitators women can expect during the hiring process.
