Minority Teacher Recruitment and Retention: A Quantitative Study
LaShonda Y. Willis
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Phoenix
Classrooms across America have become increasingly racially and ethnically diverse. Little attention has been paid to where minority teachers tend to be employed, what happens to minority teachers once they are employed, and to the role of the employing organizations in teacher staffing problems. The purpose of this quantitative comparative study was to investigate Grade 9 teachers' perceptions regarding recruitment and retention ideas for attracting talented and diverse candidates to the teaching profession throughout the State of Texas. Private schools had the highest mean than the public schools and the charter schools. Data analysis was a one-way analysis of variance to assess differences among Grade 9 diverse teacher groups. Findings showed that research question one and research question two were not statistically significant different among Public School, Private School, and Charter School groups in recruitment and retention. It was concluded and widely believed that the nation's schools suffer from dire shortages of minority teachers. A few scholars and commentators held a growing mismatch between the degree of racial diversity in the nation's student population and the degree of diversity in the nation's teaching force that this is detrimental to the growth and learning of students. Schools are facing increasing demands to prepare students for rapid economic, environmental, and social changes, for jobs that have not yet been created, for technologies that have not yet been invented, and to solve social problems that have not yet been anticipated.
