Deriving Formulae for the Area of Polygons Using Algebra

The purpose of this article is to present and discuss two recommended sequences of learning the areas of polygons, starting from the area of a rectangle. Exploring the algebraic derivations of the two sequences reveals that both are valid teaching progressions for introducing the area formula for various polygons. Further, it is suggested that students could also benefit from engaging in deriving these formulae algebraically. Given the demand for algebraic knowledge required to engage in the derivations outlined in this article, this exploration would be most appropriate for Year 9 or 10 students. Exploring the algebraic derivations in the two sequences has the potential to allow students to engage in more meaningful applications of algebra. Even though both sequences rely on knowledge of manipulating algebra, the first sequence is not as intensive algebraically and is designed for students who are not as strong in working with algebraic concepts, with each new polygon formed using hands-on geometry. The article finishes with derivations of more complex polygons, which are intended to extend learners who are able to grasp the initial derivations without too much difficulty.
