Restoring a Child's Social Emotional Well-Being: Sophie's Place
L'Tanya D. Morrow-Cain
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
The purpose of this study was to examine how to restore a child's social-emotional well being. As an administrator in a middle school, I have the opportunity to see the natural state that our children are in on a daily basis. I have observed over time, more specifically since COVID-19, that children are struggling to balance their emotions, their feelings, their reactions and responses as well as their behavior. Study participants consisted of 6th-8th graders at Alfred G. Waters Middle School in the Appoquinimink School District. Students who were dysregulated were provided a space called Sophie's Place for a visit to acquire a brain reset. Students were given multiple activity options to engage in while in the room to help settle their mind and body. The goal of the activities were to calm, restore, rejuvenate, and to provide peace to a child. The visitors to Sophie's Place were students receiving discipline referrals and children who displayed feelings of anger, hurt and confusion from peers and at times, teacher interactions. Data was collected after each visit showing that the students who needed the outlet left feeling the opposite of how they entered. Students were prompted to complete short surveys and identify their emotion by the end of their time in the room. Based on discipline referrals for the students who visited Sophie's Place, referrals either decreased or ceased completely. When students have an outlet, a calming space to go when they are feeling dysregulated, it helps to restore their emotional state and for them to reflect and finish out their day productively.
