See Art History in a New Light: Have an Art Auction
Benter, Doris J.
SchoolArts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v107 n5 p32-33 Jan 2008
At Portledge School in Locust Valley, New York, ninth graders in their upper school study art history for one semester. The visual arts department has created a vigorous new syllabus culminating in an hour-long mock art auction. The department selects several art movements (e.g., Post-Impressionism, Cubism, Abstract Expressionism, Social Realism, and Pop Art) for study. Each ninth grader is assigned to one of the movements. This creates various levels of overlapping involvement: individual students currently studying art history, the group of students assigned to a particular movement, and the middle-school patron groups. On the day of the art auction, the art movement groups (ninth graders) and patron groups (sixth through eighth graders) assemble. For each movement, two art students give an oral overview. Two others are dressed in costumes representing the historical artists whose artworks are being auction. The bidding process is also explained in this article. (Contains 1 online resource.)
