Most often, homeless students are members of minority groups who have attended several schools during their school career, are from single-parent households, and have histories of irregular school attendance. These students also frequently suffer from physical and mental challenges that are rooted in poverty, lack access to medical care, and have family members affected by mental health and alcohol and other drugs (AOD) issues. O'Keeffe Middle School in Madison, Wisconsin, is the prime recipient of homeless middle school students for a school district with 25,000 students and 11 middle schools. Although responding to homeless students in a caring and educationally responsible manner can be a challenge, following a comprehensive intake process--as well as providing ongoing student contact and support once the student is enrolled--allows the school to assimilate more than 60 homeless students each school year. In this article, the author describes how O'Keeffe Middle School welcomes homeless students, addresses the challenges presented by them, and provides ongoing support to these students.
