School segregation and inequity are deep-rooted realities in U.S. society. Despite historical efforts at integration, too many schools are de facto segregated, and those serving mostly students of color are routinely under-resourced when compared to those servicing mostly white students. Teachers and students can struggle to talk about this disparity, as conversations about various forms of inequity are often repressed or shunned in schools and in society at large. How can social studies teachers teach students about segregation and inequity in schools and create space for students to share their views on this topic inside their classrooms and in the larger community? In this article, the authors present lessons that can do just that.
