Teachers' Perceptions on Elementary School Physical Education
April Bell
ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, United States Sports Academy
Most individuals experience health challenges relating to obesity, including both children and adults across different parts of the US (American Heart Association, 2010). According to the World Health Organization (2016), obesity is especially common for children and adolescents, resulting in significant physical and mental health challenges. In a school environment, physical education forms the basis for fitness, which is crucial in the eradication of lifestyle ailments such as obesity (Bailey & DiPerna, 2015). The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine teachers' perceptions on elementary school physical education and determine the level of effectiveness of traditional physical education, along with its impact on learning. Semistructured interviews were conducted with five PE teachers in grades 4 and 5, allowing the researcher to answer research questions on traditional physical education, its limitations, and the constraints imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The research was guided by the curriculum theory, positing that physical education modalities take shape from their value, content, and processes. Emerging from a thematic analysis were seven themes: (a) PE benefits the individual growth of students, (b) PE helps students integrate personally meaningful context, (c) PE involves mastery of content, (d) PE is left out of the curriculum, (e) PE teachers experienced challenges in online classes, (f) PE teachers adjusted from traditional PE classes, and (g) PE teachers continue to be motivated to teach. The findings offer new insights with implications for practice, as educational leaders can harness PE teachers' motivation to teach to ensure the success of traditional and online PE classes.
