The Perceptions of Fifth-Grade Physical Education Teachers on Implementation of Health-Related Fitness and Team and Individual Sports Curricula
Celia L. Weaver
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Concordia University Texas
Physical education curriculum challenges students to experience a series of physical movements, degrees of flexibility, increased stamina, and components of strength that provide multiple opportunities to achieve a high level of individual fitness. Curricula that are used to achieve these areas of physical education vary from Health-Related Fitness to Team and Individual Sports. While elementary school physical education teachers use multiple elements of fitness in their classes, the tendency is to favor either Health-Related Fitness or Team and Individual Sports when developing lesson plans. The choice of a specific curriculum is based on the teacher's level of comfort and past experiences. This research examined perceptions of physical education teachers on their views of Health-Related Fitness and Team and Individual Sports and how to use these pedagogies effectively in their fifth-grade physical education classes.
