In this article, fifth graders investigate biographies to expand their knowledge of what real scientists do. The goal of this activity is to find a way to show students that all kinds of people participate in the scientific enterprise. After finding picture-book biographies, the author's next job was to ensure that students saw more than a good story in the books--that students would be able to learn from the books that this is how real people do science. One of the tools they use in their reading is a "Thinking About My Reading" sheet on which students take notes as they prepare to share a book with others. As the students read their books, there was much excitement. Several students burst out with their new knowledge only to catch themselves and save it for their presentation to the class. In these presentations, called "Book Talk," the author asked them to include important events from the scientist's life, things that stood out to them, connections they made to their own lives, to other scientists, and to other texts they read, and their lingering questions. Many students shared the fact that their scientist had been inspired at an early age, a point that many students connected to their own lives. Another common theme was that science was not always easy. The author was pleased to see that students were incorporating a wider view of scientists and that scientists now included everyone, not just a select few. (Contains 6 figures and 3 resources.)
