Influence of Parental Engagement on Academic Achievement and Behavior of Elementary Students in Grades 3-5
Frances Holston
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, William Carey University
Time has come for parents to be more involved than ever with children's educational lives. Teachers need the support at home and school to produce citizens that can work, play, and survive in the environment. When parents are involved in children's education, there is accountability that lies with each student. Grades and attendance are usually higher when parents are involved in the student's learning. Collaboration with other stakeholders to support and guide students into academic and behavioral results is vital. The study consists of data collections of student test scores and teacher perspectives from an elementary school Grades 3-5. The purpose was to find the significance of parental engagement in these grades and their influence on achievement and behavior. Through questionnaires and test data collections, the researcher gleaned the following: From this study, the results of the questions given found that parent engagement was highly beneficial in Grade 5 across both academics and behavior. There was not a significant influence in Grades 3 and 4. Teachers reported that being off task, showing disrespect, and speaking out of turn were the most common inappropriate student behaviors. Teachers also reported that providing parents with communication about what is happening in the classroom had a positive impact on the students.
