Utilizing Parental Support and Resources to Improve Perceptions and Understanding of Standards-Based Grading and Reporting Practices
Mause, Brandon R.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
The purpose of this study was to measure parental understanding of standards-based grading and reporting practices, provide resources to address any identified knowledge gaps and support parents in utilizing the new grading system to foster student success. Study participants consisted of fourth and fifth-grade parents from Cedar Lane Elementary School in the Appoquinimink School District. Participants were surveyed before implementation, provided a variety of resources to support understanding, and surveyed after implementation to measure resource effectiveness and ongoing gaps. Resources provided to parents included Zoom support sessions, a one-page infographic, an informational website, and enlightening articles. Findings support that when appropriate resources are provided to parents during the transition to standards-based grading, parental understanding and ability to support the academic success of their children increases. Findings also show that certain resource types are preferred more by parents than others. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
