This paper profiles Texas' test score trends through 2008-09. Between 2005 and 2009, the percentages of students reaching the proficient level on the state test and the basic level on NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Progress) increased in reading at grades 4 and 8 and in math at grade 8. In grade 4 math, however, the percentage scoring basic on NAEP decreased, while the percentage scoring proficient on the state test increased. Average annual gains were larger on the state test than on NAEP in grades 4 and 8 for both subjects. Trends in average (mean) test scores moved in the same direction as trends in percentages proficient/basic. (Contains 1 footnote.)
