State Test Score Trends through 2008-09, Part 1: Rising Scores on State Tests and NAEP. Iowa
Center on Education Policy
This paper profiles Iowa's test score trends through 2008-09. Between 2005 and 2009, the percentages of students reaching the proficient level on the state test and the basic level on NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Progress) increased in grade 4 reading and math and in grade 8 math. In grade 8 reading, the percentage of students reaching the basic level on NAEP decreased while the percentage proficient on the state test increased. Average annual gains were larger on the state test than on NAEP in grade 8 reading and math. In grade 4 reading, the gains on the two assessments were equal in size, while in grade 4 math, the average annual gain was larger on NAEP than on the state test. Trends in average (mean) scores increased on both assessments and in all four grade/subject combinations except in grade 8 reading on NAEP. (Contains 1 footnote.)
