Teaching Is Learning: Teacher Candidates Reflect on Aesthetic Education
Love, Angela
Teaching Artist Journal, v4 n2 p112-121 May 2006
The focus of this article is on the learning and teaching processes of six teacher candidates, made possible by the study of a work of art in their internship placement. The interns observed and worked closely with two Lincoln Center Institute (LCI) music Teaching Artists (TAs) and six classroom teachers to provide students in kindergarten through third grade opportunities to explore a performance of bluegrass music from the LCI collection entitled "Fire on the Mountain." The interns' teaching philosophies and practices were shaped by their experiences observing and collaborating with TAs, their classroom teacher, and their interactions with a work of art. Reflecting on these experiences in the internship and contrasting them with their early learning experiences revealed a commitment to incorporate aesthetic education into their teaching.
