Teaching Kids about Social Justice
Curriculum Review, v46 n8 p7 Apr 2007
The Search Institute, a nonprofit research organization in Minneapolis, Minnesota, defines developmental assets as good things everyone needs to be happy in life, such as a supportive family, a caring neighborhood, integrity, self-esteem, resistance skills, conflict resolution skills, constructive activities and a sense of purpose. "A Leader's Guide to the Adding Assets Series for Kids: Activities and Strategies for Positive Youth Development" is a comprehensive guide teachers and group leaders can use to help kids develop these essential assets. The guide, comprised of a curriculum of more than 42 sessions, correlates with eight Adding Assets Series, which can be found within eight student books. Each session focuses on one individual asset and includes activities, discussion points and suggestions for kids to develop the assets outside the classroom--among their families, peers and communities. An activity taken from the "Positive Values Assets" series, entitled "The Positive Values Assets: Equality & Social Justice," is presented.
