Wilneisha C. Jakes
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology
Academic self-efficacy is an essential role in student's academic success. There are several factors that can contribute to student academic self-efficacy. Identifying student's self-efficacy can help their experiences in school. Understanding factors that can contribute to student's self-efficacy can better prepare them for academic success. The study is grounded in Albert Bandura's self-efficacy theory. Bandura's social cognitive theory supports this study as individuals can be influenced by their own experiences and environmental factors. A qualitative research design was used to collect data. Participants were selected through purposive sampling. Participants consisted of third and fourth-grade teachers who worked in the Dallas-Fort Worth, TX area. A coding and inductive approach was applied to develop themes during the data analysis until thematic saturation occurred. Five themes were identified during the data analysis. They were socioeconomic status, teacher's influence, technology usage, motivation, and cultural values. The study is significant to the field of education because it can help educators understand the importance of academic self-efficacy within students.
