The Influence of Personality Traits on Narrative Writing Skills in Third and Fourth-Grade Students
Christine Patricia Harkness
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Fielding Graduate University
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between personality traits and effective written expression. The study participants (N = 76) were developing third and fourth-grade students. They produced three short narrative writing samples and responded to questions on a personality inventory. Written expression was measured using Total Words Written (TWW), Correct Writing Sequences (CWS), and Flesch Reading Ease (GRE) scores; while the personality traits were measured using four scales of the Five-Factor Model (Openness to Experiences, Extraversion, Conscientiousness, and Emotion Regulation). Multiple regression analyses using the personality traits as the predictors did not find a model that could statistically significantly predict the written expression variables. Pearson's correlation analyses showed that TWW had non-significant correlations with Extraversion (r = 0.112, p = 0.337), Openness to Experience (r = 0.115, p = 0.324), and Conscientiousness (r = 0.186, p = 0.110). CWS had weak correlation with Openness to Experience (r = 0.191, p = 0.100) and Conscientiousness (r = 0.222, p = 0.056). FRE had weak negative correlations with Extraversion (r = -0.091, p = 0.435) and Openness to Experience (r = -0.151, p = 0.195).
