School-wide character education is difficult and ongoing work, even without the added complication of having diverse programs and students. Despite these obstacles, King George School in Calgary, Alberta, Canada chose to engage in character education. Initially, the reasons were pragmatic. Character education seemed the only hope for any sort of peaceful coexistence that would allow students to learn and thrive. The King George School has created a seemingly impossible feat. It housed two diametrically different education programs under one school roof. The first program was a classic British-model Traditional Learning Centre in its initial year and the second one is a French language immersion program, which was already housed in the designated building. In this article, the authors describe how a thoughtfully implemented character program became the bridge that allowed staff members, students, and parents to create a cohesive school that thrived. They also present several suggestions for promoting character education programs in schools. (Contains 7 resources and 5 online resources.)
