The Heart of the Senior Year
Coe, Betsy
Montessori Life: A Publication of the American Montessori Society, v19 n4 p22-25 2007
Recent literature debates the effectiveness of the senior year, stating that it is an unproductive and unrealistic time for many students--either because they are, by that point in their school careers, disengaged and waiting to graduate, or because they are so stressed from taking Advanced Placement (AP) exams and writing college essays that they are no longer learning, but merely going through the motions. The concern and search for a cure for "senioritis" was discussed in an April 2005 "USA Today" article, by the American Association of Higher Education, and by the National Governors Association. Their suggestions ranged from eliminating the senior year to adding more rigorous courses. Fueled by the disturbing notion of the senior year being a wasted opportunity, the author decided to examine the senior year of high school students at her school, School of the Woods in Houston, Texas. In this article, the author shares the strategies used by her school to lessen "senioritis."
