This article describes a chemical-processing program at Saginaw Career Complex in Saginaw, Michigan. The program is preparing 42 11th- and 12th-graders to work as chemical-processing operators or technicians by the time they graduate from high school. It was developed in partnership with the Saginaw Career Complex--one of 51 centers in the state that deliver technical education to high schoolers--and two major chemical companies, Dow Corning Corporation and Dow Chemical Company. The program teaches students to operate chemical-processing equipment used to make such products as silicones, plastics and polystyrenes. The curriculum has students engaged in classroom learning, where many state standards are met, as well as hands-on lab work, in which students actually perform chemical-processing operations. As an alternative to entering the work world directly following graduation, students can transfer 11 credits toward a two-year associate's degree in chemical-processing technology at a neighboring community college or go on to four-year university study.
