The Relationship of Home Academic Emphasis and Post-Secondary Choice to Adolescent Hope

Purpose and Method of Study: This study aimed to determine variables or combinations of variables that impact the hope levels of tenth- to twelfth-grade students at a large urban public school in Oklahoma. While many factors influence students' hope, there is little information about the impact of HAE and PSC, in addition to the variables grade point average (GPA), attendance, and demographic information, on the hope of high school students. Participants (N = 670) responded to an annual email sent out by the district containing a student opinion survey that collected the following information: Snyder's hope scale, HAE scale, and current PSC. The students logged on to the survey with their Student ID numbers. Because of this, the district could associate their survey responses with demographic information, GPA, behavioral record, and attendance rate. Quantitative data analysis was conducted using SPSS to compute descriptive statistics and complete a three-layer hierarchical linear regression to determine which of the independent variables gender, grade level, race, SES, attendance, GPA, HAE, and PSC or combination of these variables best predicts hope scores in the student population. Findings and Conclusions: The findings of the study revealed that HAE (p = <0.001), race (p = 0.012), and GPA (p = <0.001) significantly predicted hope in the sample. Model 3, which included HAE and PSC, attributed to 11% of the variance in the regression analysis. HAE positively influences adolescents in a social, emotional, and cognitive manner. Further, GPA is positively related to adolescent hope, which is affirmed in the literature. I concluded that PSC did not impact adolescent hope, ensuring that adolescents can experience hope no matter the path after high school.
