The Relationship between Middle School College and Career Experiences and High School On-Track Indicators
Candace Villanueva
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Kansas
This is a study that examined the relationship between students participating in college and career experiences in middle school (7th and 8th grade) and meeting on-track indicators (GPA scores and attendance rates) in their first semester of 10th grade in high school that would suggest graduating from high school on time and eventually enrolling in college. Students in the sample population are characterized as primarily students of color, qualify for free or reduced lunch, and are attending a mid-sized urban school district in the Midwest. The key independent variable is the number of middle school college and career experiences (CCE) each student participated in. The key dependent variables include tenth grade on-track indicators GPA scores and attendance rates. Prior research shows these two measures are related to students eventually getting into and being successful in college (Balfanz & Byrnes, 2019; Seeskin et al., 2020). This study does not track postsecondary outcomes but rather tracks behavior in high school that would suggest postsecondary success. This study found that most of the students in the sample are not meeting the GPA 2.7 on-track indicator and there are also a significant number who have chronic absences in their first semester of 10th grade. The study found that females participate in CCE more often compared to males. It also found a statistically significant difference between Black or African American students and Hispanic students and participation in CCE. The correlational and regression analysis revealed statistically significant relationship between participation in middle school CCE and students having higher GPA scores and fewer absences in their first semester of 10th grade.
