The purpose of this qualitative research was to explore stakeholder engagement with character development in K-5 nationally recognized schools of character. Researchers used a semi-structured protocol to interview principals of schools that received National Schools of Character status. Participants were selected from the 2018 list of National Schools of Character retrieved from character.org. Six of the 20 schools contacted agreed to participate in the study. The researchers conducted two rounds of interviews that included the same group of participants. For the follow up-interviews, researchers developed a second set of questions based on the responses from the first interviews. The researchers' questions addressed stakeholder engagement in each school's character education program, included successes and challenges. Respondents elaborated on each question, as well as offered additional information. By analyzing the results from each school, the researchers identified common, recurring themes among the six participants. Five themes emerged from the data collection. Researchers found that community engagement, parent engagement, student engagement, broad support, and school culture were key factors in involving stakeholders in character development.
